- Member of the Marantaceae family, commonly known as the Prayer Plant or arrowroot family, is a group of flowering plants that includes over 550 species.
- Calatheas and/or Goeppertias are native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, including Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. They grow in the understory of rainforests, where they receive filtered light and moist soil.
- The Calathea genus has been reclassified, with many species being moved into the Goeppertia genus in 2012. But, this is still not widely accepted in the horticultural community.
- Calatheas and/or Goeppertias are sensitive to the chemicals commonly found in tap water, such as fluoride, chlorine, chloramine, and certain minerals like calcium and magnesium. These chemicals can cause leaf burn, stunted growth, or other issues. Water using distilled or purified water.
- Calatheas and/or Goeppertias are known for their ability to "pray" at night. The leaves fold upwards and close together, resembling hands folded in prayer.
- Calatheas and/or Goeppertias are known for their air-purifying properties. It can help to remove toxins from the air, such as benzene and formaldehyde.
